Over the years, consumers have become incredibly reliant on single-use plastics as they’re convenient, lightweight and easily tossable. However, this is hurting the earth, and the material is now clogging up oceans.

Thankfully, numerous brands have taken measures to keep the planet afloat. Some have banned plastics. Others charge for single-use bags. For Vancouver’s East West Market, the solution is a little different: make it so that customers don’t want plastic carry-alls.

It’s a difficult feat, but the grocery store believes the way to have people aversed from single-use plastic bags is by sticking embarrassing names on the packaging. After all, its customers visit the market for natural, organic and fair-trade produce; they’re the sort of people most likely to prefer to look good in public.

The store has thus overhauled its plastic bags to display fictional shop brandings like “Dr Toeus’ Wart Ointment Wholesale,” “Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium,” and “The Colon Care Co-Op.” These were created in the hopes that shoppers would remember to bring a reusable bag the next time they visit.

Each carrier is priced at CA$0.05 (US$0.04), and comes with the small print, “Avoid the shame. Bring a reusable bag.”

“It’s hard to always remember a reusable bag,” East West Market details. “We redesigned our plastic bags to help you never forget again.” It points out in a video that the world uses one million plastic bags per minute.

Admittedly, the logos on these plastic bags are stunning. You’ll want to own them, but will probably regret taking one home with all the looks you’ll be getting.
